SPOILER ALERT

Garapan sutradara Prancis-Polandia Roman Polanski yang saya kenal adalah The Pianist (2002) dan Ghost Writer (2010) -- saya belum pernah menonton Rosemary's Baby (1968). Kedua film di atas bertempo lambat. Namun, karakter pianis susah pada masa Perang Dunia dan ghost writer Inggris berkesan bagi saya sehingga saya tidak meragukan garapan Roman Polanski. Kontroversi (dan proses hukum) puluhan tahun membuat Roman Polanski tidak bisa syuting di New York, kota setting film ini. Tapi tidak apa. Film yang berdurasi sekitar 1 jam 16 menit ini memakai konflik yang disajikan real time dan hanya berpusar di sebuah flat saja.

Adalah Michael dan Penelope Longstreet (John C. Reilly dan Jodie Foster) yang didatangi pasangan untuk rekonsiliasi, Alan dan Nancy Cowan (Christoph Waltz dan Kate Winslet). Putra pasangan Longstreet, Zachary, mem-bully fisik Ethan Cowan, padahal mereka baru berusia 11 tahun dan hanya iseng-iseng bermain di taman. Alan sebenarnya business man yang terlalu sibuk untuk mengurusi masalah anaknya dengan teman-temannya. Nancy yang memaksanya untuk ikut datang dan mesti menahan sebal karena Alan terlalu sering diganggu telepon soal bisnis. Michael dan Penelope memaklumi itu dan bersikap seakan-akan Zachary bisa kasar karena orang tuanya kurang peka. Nancy justru merasa aneh dengan koleksi artbooks Penelope dan Alan yang membuang binatang peliharaan si anak. Alan sendiri ingin cepat-cepat pulang.

Penggambarannya tidak sepelik itu, sih. Ada saat di mana Nancy dan Penelope tertawa lepas. Ada saat di mana Michael dan Alan mengeringkan smartphone Alan dengan hair dryer. Film ini pas ditonton untuk pasangan muda yang sedang menghadapi problem anak dan pergaulannya. Penonton bisa merasakan sendiri bagaimana bersikap menjadi orang tua dan bagaimana jika berbenturan dengan orang tua lain dengan cara didik dan perspektifnya berbeda. Para cast yang terbiasa bermain di film serius berusaha keras untuk menjaga alur film agar penonton tidak bosan. Rasanya aneh juga melihat Christoph Waltz berakting santai dan witty tanpa terlepas dari bayangan pemburu Yahudi di Inglourious Basterds. Jodie Foster dan Kate Winslet yang teriak-teriaknya overrated juga cukup hanya meraih nominasi di Golden Globe saja.
