Sebelum ini saya membaca buku tentang sistem parenting yang strict di buku A Battle Hymn of Tiger Mother. Berbeda dengan buku Amy Chua itu, di sini parenting yang dilakukan oleh David Gilmour malah kebalikannya. Jadi, David berpisah dengan istrinya dan mendidik putra 15 tahunnya, Jesse, dengan full-time. Isi rapor Jesse mengecewakan dan Jesse sendiri tidak terlalu tertarik untuk lanjut bersekolah. David kemudian menyediakan lantai 3 rumahnya untuk ditinggali Jesse tanpa perlu dikenai kewajiban lain (bayar uang sewa), ia boleh berhenti sekolah dan tidak perlu bekerja asalkan ia mengikuti program ayahnya, Klub Film.

Mungkin orang tua lain akan berpikir David tidak masuk akal. Atau anak-anak yang masih suka senang-senang akan ingin orang tuanya 'keren' seperti David. Bukan hanya pembaca yang heran, atau ragu. Suatu malam, David terbangun dan berpikir apakah cara ini akan menghancurkan masa depan anaknya. Apakah dirinya menghilangkan kesempatan Jesse untuk teredukasi dengan ilmu-ilmu formal yang didapat anak-anak seusianya? David memang kritikus film, yang ia pahami hanyalah menonton film dan belajar sesuatu dari adegan favorit. Jesse jelas lebih menikmati film daripada sekolah. Dan dimulailah Klub Film yang tidak tahu sampai kapan akan berlanjut.

David memancing ketertarikan Jesse dengan Basic Instinct (1992) dan minggu berikutnya berpidato mengenai krisis nurani nyata yang dialami karakter Marlon Brando di On the Waterfront (1954) serta bagaimana film ini disebut kritikus sebagai upaya pembenaran artistik tentang pengkhianatan. Lihat! Film mulai dibawa David bukan sekadar barang senang-senang di mana Jesse bisa tertawa (atau apapun mood yang dibawa film untuk audiens saat itu), tapi juga kejadian apa yang relate dengan masa itu. David lalu membawa Jesse pada A Hard Day's Night (1964). Terlepas dari euforia semua penggila musik dan budaya era 60-an (dan euforia David) yang menganggap The Beatles adalah ikon penting masa itu, Jesse hanya berkomentar "suara mereka bagus".

David kemudian memutuskan harus ada tema untuk paket film yang dilihat Jesse. Jadi tidak acak dan 'suka-suka dia'. Lebih menyerupai pelajaran yang ada kurikulumnya. David merancang kategori ketenangan untuk High Noon (1952), Casablanca (1942), The Godfather (1972). Ia mengulas kecintaannya pada Clint Eastwood dan menawarkan A Fistful of Dollars (1964). Ia menceritakan kengerian The Exorcist (1973) yang membuatnya nonton tiga kali, hingga pengalaman menonton film istimewa Psycho (1960) dan adegan janggal (tepat sebelum adegan mandi yang terkenal itu) yang tidak pernah diketahui dibuat sengaja oleh Alfred Hitchcock atau tidak. Pada suatu masa setelah melewati masa-masa putus cinta, kokain dan geng-geng, serta film-film yang buruk (David tidak hanya mempertontonkan film-film yang menurutnya bermutu), David tahu bahwa Jesse memahami.

Jesse meninggalkan video Chungking Express (1994) di laci sebelah tempat tidurnya. Menilik dari perlakuannya pada video favoritnya itu, saya tahu Jesse telah memutuskan sesuatu. Saat inilah David tahu waktu-waktu yang ia luangkan (walau terkadang membosankan, melelahkan, hambar, dan yang dia pikir selamanya akan seperti itu), juga ternyata sama sekali bukan problem. Time will tell. David menyebut masa-masa itu sebagai: kebahagiaan tak terkatakan dan mengutip True Romance (1993) "Kau sangat keren. Kau sangat keren. Kau sangat keren."
