"I Have Cancer"
a review of '50/50'

How do you explain that a character isn't you when he speaks and behaves exactly as you do? Begitu kutipan wawancara LA Times dengan penulis naskah 50/50, Will Reiser. Judul '50/50' menjelaskan prosentase kesempatan hidup Adam Lerner yang menderita kanker tetapi sekaligus prosentase elemen fakta yang dikolaborasikan dengan elemen fiksi dalam film ini.

Schwannoma Neurofibrosarcoma (saya tidak pernah mendengar jenis ini sebelumnya) adalah jenis kanker tulang belakang yang membuat sahabat Adam, Kyle (Seth Rogen), terpaksa menghiburnya dengan cara yang keliru.

Kyle: You're gonna be fine. Young people gets cancer all the time. Celebrities get cancers. Patrick Swayze gets cancer. | Adam: Patrick Swayze? He's dead, man! |

Tapi tidak ada yang lebih terkejut dari Adam sendiri. Adam Lerner bekerja sebagai jurnalis dan hidup menyenangkan dengan pacarnya yang berambut merah dan terlalu putih (Bryce Dallas Howard, kamu bukan vampir pengintai Forks lagi!). Ia baru berusia 27, terlalu muda untuk ringkih apalagi mati.

"A tumor? That doesn't make any sense, though. I mean. I don't drink. I don't smoke... I recycle."

Kemudian, Adam pergi ke terapis yang terlalu muda untuk menanganinya (24 tahun terhitung amatiran untuk dunia medis). Adam adalah pasien ketiga Katie. Adegan favorit saya, Katie yang canggung (diperankan oleh Anna Kendrick yang ahli berbicara cepat dan karakternya tidak terlalu beda dengan Twilight dan Up In The Air) berulang kali mengimplementasikan teori "sentuhan ke pasien akan menenangkan dia". Adam justru tidak nyaman dengan itu tetapi Katie selalu lupa dan berulang kali minta maaf. Ketika hubungan mereka justru semakin dekat, Adam mulai mengizinkan Katie menyentuh tangannya :')

Kyle yang tidak pernah bisa serius menjadi sidekick yang penting di sini (khas karakter Seth Rogen). Adam yang cenderung datar-datar saja diajak menerima kanker dengan pemikiran 'saya sebentar lagi meninggal maka saya harus senang-senang' atau 'kanker membuat gadis-gadis akan berempati pada saya'. Mereka pun keliaran di klab. Adam pun mencukur habis rambutnya dan mengenakan kupluk kemana-mana.

Adam: Great song! Girl: Totally. Adam: I have cancer.

Adam bahkan bertemu dengan perempuan yang akhirnya mau berhubungan seks dengannya walaupun tahu ia pengidap kanker.

Adam: It's not contagious!

Di masa-masa seperti ini justru hidup Adam lebih santai. Ia belajar mengenai hidup dari pasien-pasien kanker lainnya (dengan humor yang tidak karuan pula). Ia tertawa melewati dinding lukisan anak-anak di lorong rumah sakit yang bertuliskan 'Families Facing Cancer Together'. Dan ketika kondisi semakin memburuk dan sepertinya kemoterapi tidak mempan, Adam menyetir gila-gilaan dan mengusir Kyle. Adegan mental breakdown yang Hollywood-cliched tapi tetap saja tidak mengganggu esensi penuturan kesedihannya.

Adam: That's what everybody's been saying, you'll feel better and don't worry and this is all fine and it's not.
Kathy: You can't change your situation. The only think that you can change is how you choose to deal with it.

Ia berpesan kepada ibunya (Anjelica Huston berperan sebagai ibu yang selalu khawatir) sebelum menjalani operasi yang menentukan.

Can you make sure I'm gonna wake up after, Mom?

Will Reiser yang menuliskan naskah ini benar-benar pernah mengidap kanker di usia muda. Meskipun begitu, adegan-adegan dramatis sering disangka sebagai penggambaran nyata dirinya padahal itu bagian fiksinya. Ia tidak mengharu biru di mobil dan tidak menjadikan kanker alasan untuk meniduri perempuan (LA Times). Joseph Gordon-Levitt kembali memerankan karakter yang labil (hopeful/hopeless) seperti (500) Days of Summer. Dan ia selalu believable. Film ini ringan, saya menonton dua kali karena yang pertama ketiduran (tapi bukan karena membosankan). Ini tipe film yang 'membekas pada saat itu dan mungkin akan lewat dengan cepat di pemikiran beberapa orang'. Saya menyukai bumbu-bumbu film ini, tentang menghadapi hidup yang tidak selalu menyenangkan lewat cara-cara normatif: hati gembira adalah obat ... dan saya kira resep itu lebih banyak benarnya.
