Sutradara Alexander Payne mengingatkan saya pada euforia film dengan ensemble bagus yang tidak disangka-sangka meraih banyak nominasi Golden Globes dan Academy Awards pada tahun 2005. Oh iya, dan juga Sandra Oh! Setelah itu, saya tidak pernah mendengar karyanya lagi. Baru pada 2011 ini, ia kembali menyutradarai sebuah film yang diangkat cerita dari novel yang ditulis Kaui Hart Hemmings. The Descendants menjadi film terbaik di kategori Drama pada gelaran ke 69 Golden Globe lalu menyingkirkan The Help (Tate Taylor), Hugo (Martin Scorsese), The Ides of March (George Clooney), Moneyball (Bennett Miller), dan War Horse (Steven Spielberg). George Clooney menjadi Best Actor mengalahkan nama tenar lainnya, Fassbender, Gosling, DiCaprio, dan sahabatnya sendiri, Pitt.

George Clooney yang berusia 50 tahun dengan pas memerankan Matt King, ayah dua anak. Putri pertamanya Alexandra tinggal di boarding school dan terlalu kaya vocabulary sumpah serapah. Scottie, putri keduanya baru berusia 10 tahun dan dihadapkan dengan lingkungan sekolah yang terlalu stereotipikal. Guru-guru di sekolah berpendapat Scottie meresahkan teman-teman sebayanya dengan foto ibunya yang sedang koma. Istri Matt, Elizabeth King, mengalami koma setelah mengalami kecelakaan motorboat.

"My friends on the mainland think just because I live in Hawaii, I live in paradise... Are they insane? Do they think we're immune to life?"

Jangan pernah mengira kehidupan yang tampak menyenangkan di permukaan akan 100 persen menyenangkan pada kenyataannya. Even if you live in a paradise named Hawaii. Matt sejatinya adalah lawyer yang diwarisi puluhan ribu hektar tanah milik nenek moyangnya dengan hamparan savana dan danau di Kaua'i. Tepat tahun ini, tanah itu harus dijual demi pengembangan.

Matt bertanya pada dirinya sendiri "What is it that makes the women in my life wanna destroy themselves?" Sebagai ayah yang clueless dan mengharap istrinya untuk bangun dari koma, ia bingung bagaimana memperlakukan kedua anaknya supaya menjadi anak yang 'baik-baik'.... Dan sang ibu tidak akan bangun. Dokter bilang organ vitalnya stagnan, tidak ada reflek pada batang otak dan pupilnya. Matt menjemput Alex di boarding school US$ 35,000-nya dan mendapati putrinya berkeliaran di jam malam lalu berkata "Fuck Mom!". Ada adegan underwater yang bagus ketika Matt jujur pada Alex bahwa ibunya tak akan kembali. Alex mengakui bahwa ia tahu ibunya selingkuh. Keduanya memutuskan mendatangi laki-laki agen properti selingkuhan ibunya itu.

Julie Speer tidak tahu bahwa suaminya, Brian, selingkuh dengan istri orang. Lalu, ada laki-laki dan anak perempuan remajanya (Matt dan Alex, maksud saya) mengunjungi cottage mereka saat berlibur. Keluarga King juga mampir ke tanah warisan itu dan Scottie berkata ingin piknik juga di sana. Matt dan Alex terdiam menatap kejauhan. Ketika kembali, Matt dan keluarganya (beserta ayah-ibu Elizabeth dan teman Alex yang ikut berlibur) mendoakan Elizabeth dan membuang abunya di laut. Saya rasa itu bisa menjadi metafora kerelaan Matt dan anak-anaknya untuk memaafkan kerumitan yang diciptakan ibunya sebelum tiada itu.

Saya cukup terkejut film ini menang Best Drama di Golden Globe, tapi ya memang The Descendants masih Oscar worthy. Peran George Clooney sebagai ayah yang bingung tidak lebih baik daripada veteran CIA Bob Barnes di Syriana yang menyumbangkan piala Oscar di karirnya. Untuk penggemar film lucu, ada Matthew Lillard si Shaggy dalam Scobby Doo yang perannya lebih melas. Peran Sid sebagai teman laki-laki Alex yang dangkal dan hobi berbicara sesuka dia menarik perhatian saya. Di awal film, ia menertawai nenek Alex yang Alzheimer tetapi di akhir adegan ia membela 'perjuangan' Matt untuk istrinya di depan kakek Alex. Saya kira film ini ingin menuturkan perjuangan perasaan untuk rela melepaskan sesuatu yang pernah menyakitkan, yang ironisnya dilakukan oleh orang yang dicintai. Tidak semua orang bisa melakukan itu. Being patient takes a lifetime.
